However, in 2024, the highest ‘Beat’ rates are now seen in the “Peak” (49.4%) and “Not Busy” (48.81%) seasons. For the “Busy” season, 2024 shows a slightly reduced ‘Lose’ rate (34.07% down from 35.08% in 2023), though the ‘Beat’ rate dropped to 41.39% from previous levels.

In comparing top-performing cities, October 2023 shows Palma de Mallorca, Paris, and Tokyo leading with the highest ‘Beat’ rates, each exceeding 66%. Other competitive cities that year include Barcelona, Cancun, Porto, and Rome. By October 2024, Paris and Palma de Mallorca remain top performers, joined by Lisbon. Tokyo’s ‘Beat’ rate slightly declines but stays competitive, while Porto (61.87%) and Cancún (54.52%) achieved higher ‘Beat’ rates.

For cities with higher ‘Lose’ rates, October 2023 data reveals Ho Chi Minh City (52.9%) and Macau (53.43%) with the highest ‘Lose’ rates to OTAs, alongside Seoul, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. By October 2024, Ho Chi Minh City’s high ‘Lose’ rate persists (54.78%), with new cities like Rio de Janeiro and Vancouver joining the list of High-Lose-Rate locations. Other cities facing increased OTA competition in 2024 include Las Vegas and Zurich.

3. Comparative Analysis with Booking.com and Expedia

In October 2023, Booking.com and Expedia demonstrated low ‘Lose’ rates, with 25.92% for Booking.com and 24.07% for Expedia. By October 2024, both achieved even lower ‘Lose’ rates, with Expedia’s dropping further to 18.53% and Booking.com’s to 20.69%. Expedia also maintained a stable ‘Beat’ rate while showing a strong ‘Meet’ rate of 35.08%. Booking.com dynamics change throughout the year, with unique patterns in EU destinations. Notably, Expedia stays competitive in Asia, where the direct hotel’s ‘Lose’ rate is particularly pronounced.
